What is it? Who is it for?

What is this all about?

Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?

  1. Speaking in tongues is foretold in Old Testament prophecies. (Isaiah 28:11-12)

  2. The New Testament declares the fulfillment of this Old Testament prophecy. (1 Corinthians 14:21)

  3. All 120 original disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues, including Mary, the mother of Jesus. (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:14, Acts 2:4)

  4. The first Gentiles who were saved received the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. (Acts 10:44-46)

  5. The apostle Paul spoke in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:18) and said that he would be a model for all believers of all times. (1 Timothy 1:16)

  6. More than 25 years after Pentecost, those who received the Holy Spirit spoke in other tongues. (Acts 19:6)

  7. Above all, Jesus said that one of the signs of a believer would be speaking in other tongues (evidence of the Holy Spirit). (Mark 16:15-18)

GOD PROMISES THE HOLY SPIRIT TO ALL WHO ASK!

The gift of the Holy Spirit did NOT disappear with the Apostles, as some say; it is for every believer in Jesus.

Many quote 1 Corinthians 13:8 which says:

"...if there are tongues, they will cease;" But in the context of Scripture, it says, "when the perfect comes..." (1 Corinthians 13:10).

We haven't reached that time of perfection; Jesus Christ is "the perfect one," and although He has promised to return, He hasn't yet. So, until He does, we need all the help we can get.

In his letter to the Corinthian believers (1 Corinthians 1:7-8), Paul promises that God will not withdraw the gift of the Holy Spirit, not even until Christ's return. God promises the Holy Spirit to those who ask for Him!

WHAT IS IT FOR?

COURAGE AND POWER: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

INTIMATE COMMUNICATION WITH GOD: The Devil cannot intercept. "He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God." (1 Corinthians 14:2)

THE HOLY SPIRIT INTERCEDES: for you while you pray in tongues. (Romans 8:26-27)

The Holy Spirit instructs and comforts us. (Luke 12:12, Acts 9:31)

It builds you up and strengthens you to resist Satan's attacks. (1 Corinthians 14:14)

IT IS USED TO PRAISE GOD: "God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:24)

Content for the different gifts of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:8-11)

Remember, the gifts function in the church in an orderly manner according to the Spirit's guidance, not in confusion.

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8

HOW TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT:

Just as you receive salvation, you receive the Holy Spirit by faith when you ask Jesus for what He has promised you; remember that you will not receive anything bad when you ask for the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:11-13 says: “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Doubt, hidden sin, and not fully surrendering to God can prevent you from receiving the Holy Spirit. If you don't have any of those things, you can confidently proceed to receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

You can receive this wonderful gift just as they did in Acts 9:6: “Then Paul laid his hands on them, and the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.” You can allow Spirit-filled Christians to lay hands on you and guide you to receive the Holy Spirit by lifting up your hands and praising God. When the Lord puts a strange word in your mind, speak it boldly. Your lips may stammer, but as you repeat the word in faith, the Spirit will give you more words. At first, you may only be able to say a few words, but the more you speak in faith, the easier it will become.

Keep practicing your new prayer language until it becomes natural, and you will experience a new peace and joy in knowing the Lord's presence. The more you pray in tongues, the stronger your faith will become. Jude 20 says, "But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit..." This gift will continue to make you strong enough to resist Satan's attacks and courageous enough to be a good witness for Jesus Christ.
